Graduate Gödel's incompleteness theorems
I saw this explanation of Gödel's incompleteness theorems in another thread: Is this correct? And does this mean that all unprovable statements in math, will take the form of a self-referential paradox? If this is true, I don't get why the incompleteness theorem is considered deep, if it...- hyperds

Is Indeterminism Logically Possible?
Interesting. I am not sure if this was your point, but since there are uncountable random sequences which cannot be described by math, then you could have a universe in which the quantum events are dictated by a finite or infinite string of random numbers. And then if you assume Max Tegmark's...- hyperds

Is Indeterminism Logically Possible?
Well, I assumed that it is mathematically impossible to have an algorithm which produces truly random numbers. I just assumed that this has been mathematically proven, but in my 2 minutes of googling I couldn't find a proof. But, I'm sure someone could come up with a proof that true randomness...- hyperds

Is Indeterminism Logically Possible?
Before Everett's Many Worlds interpretation of QM, it appeared that reality may have been indeterministic, although people like Einstein famously argued that this was not possible. When you think about it, I don't see how indeterminism could even be possible. Logically, the universe would...- hyperds

Graduate Opinion on PEAR: Analyzing QM & Human Consciousness
According to the Everett interpretation it is a fact that the wave functions of outside particles affect the wave function of the brain, for example if you were gambling on the the spin of an electron, betting that it was up, then the apparatus measured the spin, and found it down, what is...- hyperds

Graduate Opinion on PEAR: Analyzing QM & Human Consciousness
If you are not familiar with the http://www.princeton.edu/~pear/experiments.html" , basically they use devices which create "quantum events", and then a person tries to influence the outcome of the results through thought. I first came across it a few years ago, and I even purchased on of the...- hyperds

Graduate The Nature of Physical Proof: Is String Theory Proven?
The way I see it, since ST has been shown to be the only way that has had success in uniting ALL of the forces into a consistent mathematical structure, it HAS to be true. What would it take to "prove" it in the minds of skeptics? Would the discovery of the Higgs Boson be sufficient, or would...- hyperds

Graduate The Nature of Physical Proof: Is String Theory Proven?
Edit: Here is the short (but more confusing and less rigorous) version of what I wrote below: For something to be considered a "law" it needs to make predictions which can then be tested, and if they are proven then it is considered law. However, scientists have been looking at the nature of...- hyperds

Graduate Mathematical Proof of String Theory
I saw this video, where Edward Witten says that "there were a lot less theories that were possible" when talking about string theory http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLZKqGbNfck#t=3m30s", so is he talking about ANY theory, or only theories which use strings? It seems to me that scientists must...- hyperds

Graduate Mathematical Proof of String Theory
I have only taken a few college physics courses, and I have watched some videos about string theory. I would like to get excited about M-theory, but I have always wondered, why there wouldn't be an infinite number of ways to unite the forces, in which case M-theory is just one possibility...- hyperds
