I don't intend to discuss religion. I don't want it to be for people to criticize or argue over people's beliefs. It's intended as more of a poll than anything else.

I can see what you're saying, but I thought that the additional amount of energy lost as heat via friction in the faster-moving 'single' system would be less than the amount of energy lost through friction in two systems, if you were doing the same work with them both running at a lower speed...
But if they can use the freezers to cool the supermarket, yes, they would have to work harder, but they wouldn't need any air conditioning systems in that area, so it may well be more efficient, as there would be fewer moving parts etc.
