Calculus Planes - General Cartesian Equations
Homework Statement Write down the general cartesian equation of a vertical plane (parallel to the z-axis), a non-vertical plane and a horizontal plane (parallel to the x; y-plane) together with their normal vectors. Find the cartesian equations of the line of intersection of the plane 5x + y ¡...- Ulti

Work, energy and power on a slope.
Homework Statement The diagram shows a particle A of mass m which can move on the rough surface of a plane inclined at an angle theta to horizontal ground, where theta = arcsin 0.6. A second particle B of mass 2m hangs freely attached to a light inextensible string which passes over a smooth...- Ulti

What Is the Maximum Inclination Angle for Equilibrium of a Cut Square Plate?
That would be (0, 4) (5.57, 5.57) The difference in the x coordinate divided by the y-height of the center of mass is the tan-1 of the angle. tan[sup]-1[sup] \frac{5.57-4}{5.57} = 16 = Right answer! Thanks! One thing I still don't understand is how this gave me the right answer...- Ulti

What Is the Maximum Inclination Angle for Equilibrium of a Cut Square Plate?
If I draw a line from the centre of mass to the direction of gravity I still don't see how I can work out the angle. I believe I can use trigonometry somewhere but I fail to see where I can apply it...- Ulti

What Is the Maximum Inclination Angle for Equilibrium of a Cut Square Plate?
Thanks for the answer, I've done the rest of the questions which is the same but with a rectangular lamina and I just drew a rectangle from it and used the inverse of tan to calculate it. I'm not too sure on how to calculate the moments (I assume you mean that by "torque") in this kind of...- Ulti

What Is the Maximum Inclination Angle for Equilibrium of a Cut Square Plate?
Homework Statement A uniform square metal plate of side 10 cm has a square of side 4cm cut away from one corner. (a) Find the position of the centre of mass of the remaining plate. It is now placed on a rough inclined plane as shown in the diagram. The place is inclined to the horizontal at...- Ulti

What Happens to the Acceleration When the Thread Snaps?
Homework Statement A mass of 1kg is suspended from a 50N spring balance, and then a thread from the first mass suspends a further mass of 2kg. The thread is then burned through. What is the acceleration of each mass at the instant the thread snaps? Homework Equations F=ma The Attempt at...- Ulti

Coefficient of friction along an inclined plane
Wow I solved the coefficient of friction... It was (g sin16.3 - 2 cos 16.3)/(-2 sin 16.3 - g cos 16.3) = 0.083 No idea how to work out acceleration still though.- Ulti

Coefficient of friction along an inclined plane
Ah I see, so that's where I went wrong on that part, I've drawn a free body diagram but I always thought I could just add the 2N onto it as it is and this is the first time I encountered a problem. (Obviously I made a big mistake when I said the acceleration was measured in N xD) EDIT: Can't...- Ulti

Coefficient of friction along an inclined plane
Homework Statement A horizontal force of 2N is just sufficient to prevent a block of mass 1kg from sliding down a rough plane inclined at arcsin 7/25 (=16.3 degrees) to the horizontal. Find the coefficient of friction between the block and the plane and then acceleration with which the block...- Ulti
