Graduate Can somebody explain the Warp Theory Equation?
Could somebody please explain the following equation for me? ds^2 = −c^2 dt^2 + [dx − vs (t)f(rs)dt]^2 + dy^2 + dz^2 where f(rs)=(tanh(σ(rs + R)) − tanh(σ(rs − R)))/(2tanh(σR). I've wrestled with it for a while, but quite frankly do not get it. I'm only up through Calc II, but I'm more than...- xXIHAYDOIXx

Graduate Are Black Holes Deceivingly Still?
Can gravity cause the Doppler Effect in addition to velocity? And I realize that the identity of a black hole could easily be determined gravimetrically, but the idea of someone being pulled in was never meant to be the main idea of the post. Anyway, if the Doppler Effect turned outgoing light...- xXIHAYDOIXx

Graduate Are Black Holes Deceivingly Still?
To my understanding, as an object approaches the event horizon of a black hole, the light that is seen by a relatively static observer slows down more and more until the light is eventually "trapped" on the event horizon, making it appear to the observer as though the object is standing still...- xXIHAYDOIXx

Graduate Wormholes - A way to violate energy conservation?
Happy to. :) Although, many advances in science did begin in, and are first explained through, fiction. I'll try to keep it a little more on the science side though.- xXIHAYDOIXx

Graduate GR Class: Is it Enough to "Know" General Relativity?
I take it by your saying graduate level that you are in college. I have not taken any GR classes nor am I even in college, but as a general rule, I would usually say that the harder the course, the more you will learn and the faster you will learn it. So if you aren't afraid of a harder course...- xXIHAYDOIXx

Graduate Wormholes - A way to violate energy conservation?
I'll let people smarter than I answer the question about wormholes (although my knee-jerk reaction is no) but as for interstellar communication, I have seen some forms of sifi use typically two methods. The first is what most people would think. They just beam em waves through an active...- xXIHAYDOIXx

Graduate Why is the light clock accurate?
I think I understand what you mean. But wouldn't that mean that, if they were not necessarily to stay in agreement, then one type of clock may register a different level of time dilation than another even though each type of clock (assuming they are in the same category) should be considered...- xXIHAYDOIXx

Graduate Why is the light clock accurate?
I think perhaps Bill K misunderstood what I was saying. I was not saying that the way a light clock works is the way time dilation works, but rather is just an evidence for it. I was then wondering why it was that this evidence, which to me appears specific only to the form of measurement, had...- xXIHAYDOIXx

Graduate Why is the light clock accurate?
My friend and I have debated about this for some time and, because the vast majority of the scientific community backs him, I presume him to be correct but still do not understand why. I have far from an extensive knowledge of relativity, but I will try not to make a complete fool of myself...- xXIHAYDOIXx

High School Create a trebuchet that is able to launch a 1ft boulder
I realized I was a little too vauge in my original post so I wish to clarify some things. First off, I realized that the cement most likely would not provide the kinetic energy necessary to launch the 1 ft boulder which I estimate to be about 120-140lbs (54kg-64kg). My new plan is to fill two...- xXIHAYDOIXx

High School Create a trebuchet that is able to launch a 1ft boulder
I am attempting to create a trebuchet that is able to launch a 1ft boulder (approximately) 100 yds using a trebuchet mechanism. My current idea is basically to use three 80 lbs bags of cement as the counterwieght and use a sling system at the end of the arm as the launching component. On...- xXIHAYDOIXx

Graduate Could Kinetic Energy Weapons Revolutionize Modern Warfare and Space Missions?
A while back, I read a Tom Clancy book in which they theorized about a weapon based on kinetic energy. In short, they would drop huge steel rods that were controlable in order to eliminate buildings and the like. These weapons were protrayed as extremely powerful. So, on to my questions...- xXIHAYDOIXx

Straw Bridge Building Project Help
I am not an engineer, and I see it may be to late, but depending on your materials and restrictions, I may suggest a truss bridge. If you double up the straws enough, the bridge should hold well enough. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truss_bridge" is a link. Maybe search it on whichever search...- xXIHAYDOIXx

Constructing a Strong Bridge with Limited Materials
I have decided on a truss bridge it this kind of shape: /\/\ There are of course conecting beams between the triangles. To add a little more support, I'm quadrupling up the base roadbed boards as well as the very base boards. It seems to me that this shape of triangle should cause the bridge to...- xXIHAYDOIXx
