SUMMARY

The W7 stream cipher, also known as a key stream generator, is named for its association with Wave7 Optics Inc., where its primary authors, Thomas and Anthony, conducted their research. The "W" likely represents "wave," while the "7" refers to its bit length of 2^7=128. This cipher is discussed in detail in the original paper available at the IETF link provided. The W7 cipher appears to be a legacy technology in the field of cryptography.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of stream ciphers and key stream generation
  • Familiarity with cryptographic terminology and concepts
  • Knowledge of bit length and its implications in encryption
  • Basic awareness of cryptographic research papers and their significance
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the specifications of the W7 stream cipher in the IETF draft document
  • Explore the history and applications of stream ciphers in modern cryptography
  • Learn about the impact of bit length on encryption strength and performance
  • Investigate the role of Wave7 Optics Inc. in the development of cryptographic technologies
USEFUL FOR

Cryptographers, security researchers, and anyone interested in the historical context and technical details of stream ciphers, particularly the W7 cipher.

The W7 is a stream cipher or a key stream generator. What does W7 stand for?

Here's the original paper:
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-thomas-w7cipher-01

So maybe it is W for wave and 7 for its bit length ##2^7=128##. But more likely is, that it is due to the fact that two main authors (Thomas and Anthony) did their research under Wave7 Optics Inc. (cp. http://www.manta.com/c/mbyckx0/wave7-optics-inc and http://www.techonline.com/directory/wave7-optics). Maybe both sevens are of the same origin though. However, it looks a bit like a thing of the past.
