Which Engineering Universities Outside India are Good and How to Apply?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying reputable engineering universities outside of India and the application process for prospective students. Participants explore various institutions across multiple countries and inquire about scholarship opportunities based on SAT scores.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks for recommendations on good engineering universities outside India, specifically excluding MIT.
  • Another participant provides an extensive list of engineering schools in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia, noting that the list is not exhaustive and lacks verification.
  • There is a discussion about the availability of scholarships based on SAT scores, with one participant expressing skepticism about their significance in the admissions process.
  • Concerns are raised regarding the limited scholarship opportunities for non-US citizens at undergraduate levels in the US, with a suggestion that graduate school may offer more funding options.
  • One participant mentions the potential for funding for Ph.D. students, indicating that many programs provide tuition and stipends regardless of nationality.
  • Another participant inquires about the order of the Canadian universities listed, seeking clarification on whether it was random.
  • There is a mention of a specific university, Iowa State University, and its demographic composition of Indian students, highlighting a personal experience related to the physics department.
  • A participant asks for guidance on how to apply to a particular college, indicating they are currently pursuing a diploma and wish to apply for engineering programs abroad.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the importance of SAT scores in securing scholarships, with some asserting that they are not a significant factor. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best approach for applying to universities and the availability of scholarships for international students.

Contextual Notes

The lists of universities provided are not verified and may not be complete. There are also unresolved questions about the specific scholarship opportunities available for international students, particularly at the undergraduate level.

Thanx...
Lemme refine my question...which universities(gud ones) offer scholarships on SAT scores(I&II) and how much??

I can only answer for the US schools... but I don't think *any* "gud" university offers scholarships based on SAT scores. SAT scores are a very small part of the total picture and are really not that important compared to grades and extracurricular activites.

Worse for you, while the US schools *do* offer many undergraduate scholarships, there are relatively few available to non-US citizens. (I assume from your original message that you are from India.)

If you want to study in the US, consider graduate school instead. There are many more funding opportunities for foreign students there.

Astronuc, the list for Canada - is there any particular order to it or is it just random?

I'm going to have to add Wasada for Japan.

Astronuc, where did you pull that list from?

ranger, as far as I know there is now particular order other than when they were put on the list.

The source of the list is - http://www.graduateshotline.com/tope.html
as well as a couple I added. The national lists are not considered complete, nor I have I verified them.

Other lists are available for a price.

Too right!

What a bizarrely short opening post.

By graduate you mean masters, right??

I was actually thinking about the relatively high amount of funding available for Ph.D. students. It is fairly common (although certainly not universal) for schools to give all of their science/engineering Ph.D. students tuition and a stipend, regardless of nationality. (Unsurprisingly, better schools have more money and you have a much better chance of a free ride there.)

I'm not really familiar with M.S. funding levels... but I'd guess that even there, there is more funding than for foreign undergraduates.

There seem to be a lot of Indians over here at Iowa State University (which is known for engineering), so maybe you'd feel at home here?

Strangely though, almost none of them are in the physics department. I could swear that I'm the only Indian graduate student in the whole place, and I'm not sure I even count, since I'm American born.

Go to the college's web site. All colleges and universities in the US have online application forms, as far as I know.
