What is Air compressor: Definition and 38 Discussions
An air compressor is a pneumatic device that converts power (using an electric motor, diesel or gasoline engine, etc.) into potential energy stored in pressurized air (i.e., compressed air). By one of several methods, an air compressor forces more and more air into a storage tank, increasing the pressure. When the tank's pressure reaches its engineered upper limit, the air compressor shuts off. The compressed air, then, is held in the tank until called into use. The energy contained in the compressed air can be used for a variety of applications, utilizing the kinetic energy of the air as it is released and the tank depressurizes. When tank pressure reaches its lower limit, the air compressor turns on again and re-pressurizes the tank.
An air Compressor must be differentiated from a pump because it works for any gas/air, while pumps work on a liquid.
Hello,
The technician installed a new AC split without a vacuum pump. (Gree 24000 BTU Inverter)
Should we drain the refrigerant, do vacuum, and refill the refrigerant?
It is written in the AC manual that we should vacuum during installation.
I read that air and humidity are harmful for the...
I have an interest in storing, for later use, energy from excess shaft power developed by a wind turbine. Currently I am assuming that the compressor is running in a steady fashion, continually drawing 300K, 1.0 atm. air into the compression chamber and compressing it to 20 atms. before...
Consider, I have a dynamic system model for air compressor. Which means I have modeled the system by including its physics. Does this means I also included the transients of the system?
What I think is, when i modeled any system with equations, I think that includes the transients. Is it...
Hello all,
I need to know what is the difference between the percent power and efficiency for air compressor. Is it the same or what is the relationship between them.
Thanks
Homework Statement
Air is to be compressed from a pressure of 1 bar and a temperature of
20°C to a pressure of 15 bar in a two stage compressor with intercooling.
After intercooling the air temperature returns to 20°C and the polytropic

So my boss hook me up with the Compressed Air Calculations which we never did previously at our workplace.
So started researching about the subject and designed a Compressed air system.
The only thing i am not sure about now here is the relation between CFM vs SCFM vs Pressure.
Let us take an...
If I want to lift a car of 1500 kg with a air compressor and with 50 nozzles, what should be the size of nozzles and what should be the pressure of air compressor and at what pressure will the air come out through nose so that it could be easily be lifted.
Hi everyone,
I'm sorry if it sounds dumb but I'm struggling here trying to understand how to increase the pressure in a pipe using an air compressor. I wasn't able to find information for this really basic engineering problem, so hope you guys could help me.
Basically, the idea here is to...
Halfway through my thesis on a mach 2 ramjet, and I unfortunately realize that I need 50-72 CFM to test it. The only ACs I have are 2 CFM portable pancakes. Is it possible to run say a 25 CFM AC at 50 CFM for a short period of 10-60 seconds? Is there a quantitative way to find how long the AC...
I'm trying to calculate the battery requirements for an experimental home built air compressor. I understand that electromagnetic air compressors operate using attraction and repulsion forces created by electromagnets using the basic magnetic principle that like poles of two magnets repel and...
Homework Statement Air enters a compressor at 100 kPa and 290 K, where it is compressed adiabatically, where the flow rate is 0.1 kg/s. If the volume compression ratio is (V1/V2=8). Determine the following (Assuming the air is ideal with constant specific heat):
1- The temperature and the...
Sorry if this is the wrong forum to ask. I have a fine spray application where I need ~140 psi but only .3CFM. I'm trying not to buy a regular air compressor (money wasted on unneeded CFM) and am looking at tire inflators, but very few of them have CFM ratings. Any suggestions?
I posted this on Eng-tips and no replies yet:( I'm trying to design an as-simple-and-cheap-as-possible supersonic wind tunnel using an air compressor (this even possible? given the energy losses from shock waves...).
I have access to a Porter-Cable 150psi, .8hp air compressor. Questions:

Very new to these matters, so please bear with me if my basic HVAC understanding is imprecise:
To start, I had a system in which airflow through a pipe was A) filtered for contaminants before flowing on to B) a compressor which outputted the flow at an increased discharge pressure. The A)...
Hi all,
Currently I am undertaking a project and I am a little bit confused about the free air delivery (F.A.D.) of an air compressor because I need to purchase an air flow meter and don't want to buy something completely out of the ball park.
From the information sheet, the compressor has...

A small adiabatic air compressor is used to pump air into a 20-m3 insulated tank. The tank initially contains air at 25°C and 101.33 kPa, exactly the conditions at which air enters the compressor. The pumping process continues until the pressure in the tank reaches 1,000...
hi friends,
I am confused with incompressible and compressible flow. Can i use moody diagram for air compressor. How can i calculate pressure drop in pipe.
Air Compressor: What would "twin-cylinder" mean?
I'm figuring out details about an old compressor and it's made by a Greek Company. I can't find too many details but one part that confuses me is it says "twin cylinder".
Picture below. Specs say:
Oil lubricated twin-cylinder...
An air compressor is used to compress air from 100kPa and 30°C to 800kPa at a rate of 120kg/min. By having the inter-cooling feature the compression is done at constant temperature of 30°C. calculate the power required for the compression.
Known data:
P(initial)=100kPa
P(final)=800kPa...
Respected Gentelmens please advice regarding to my queries.
What would be required range of cfm of air compressor to lift a weight about 100 kg.
and advice regarding small but effective air compressor available.
Hi,
First time user here.
I was hoping someone could help me calculate the CFM of air needed for an Air Compressor to air-clean 16 tubes. The Compressor is connected to a header that has 116 PSI of Pressure. The header is connected to 16 thin pipes that have nozzle tips with a 1.5 inch...
Could someone help me with getting an understanding of the equations for the power required to compress air please.
I found this Calculator on the internet:

I am unsure if it is suitable or accurate enough etc. I see...
Hi, I have a fluid dynamic question. I need to know the volume airflow rate (cfm) for head loss calculations in my CTIS (central tire inflation system). My goal is to use this info to come up with an analytical model of the system.
Our facility has an air compressor that is set to 72 psi...
OK race fans, I bought a pancake air cylinder from Mcmaster carr. Rated at 670 lbs at 100 psi and it fits under the rear wing mount and when compressed air is applied , the cylinder lifts the rear half of the race car. Problem is at the garage at the race course. The air compressor in the...
I am an engineer but have a rather dumb question regarding superchargers for engines and probably compressors in general.
Most specifications are give as XXcfm at XX psi. I am trying to understand if this truly means we are moving that amount of air at the rated psi or if that means that...
Hi Guys
I m thinking of making a Solar air compressor
ie
heating air in a closed vessel ( constant volume heat addition) using parabolic reflectors etc till reaches an optimum pressure
At this point a check value opens, and the the pressurised air is made to pass through a heat exchanger (...
i recently went to a air compressor workshop.
so i want to know what the core differences are in gas compressors and air compressors as the workshop didnt really explain that.
cheers
Hello, below are some specs I was provided of a micro screw air compressor, its physical dimensions are 4x4x4 and it seems pretty impressive for its size. However I am trying to understand a few things about the data that was provided.
I am provided 6 charts on power/airflow/psi etc, each...
I just have purchased an air compressor
Nikota 2 hp., 4 gallon twin tank, 115 psi,
and i was wondering what kind of oil i am supposed to put in the pump
also i don't have any directions
any suggestions?

i have a couple questions about air compressors..
1) how dependant is psi/cfm on size? and can this barrier be overcome by a greater input force/speed?
2) which is reliant on speed the compressor is turning, flow rate or pressure?
