SUMMARY

Taking three upper-level physics courses—Electricity and Magnetism, Thermodynamics, and Classical Mechanics—in one semester is feasible for students with adequate time management and commitment. Participants in the discussion emphasize the importance of assessing personal workload, including extracurricular activities, to determine if this academic challenge is manageable. Success hinges on dedicating sufficient time to each subject, as these courses require significant effort to excel. Balancing multiple demanding subjects can lead to a rewarding educational experience if approached strategically.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of upper-level physics concepts, specifically Electricity and Magnetism, Thermodynamics, and Classical Mechanics.
  • Time management skills to balance coursework and extracurricular activities.
  • Ability to assess personal workload and academic capacity.
  • Familiarity with study techniques that enhance retention and understanding of complex subjects.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research effective time management strategies for students in rigorous academic programs.
  • Explore study techniques specifically for mastering upper-level physics courses.
  • Investigate the curriculum and prerequisites for advanced physics courses at your institution.
  • Learn about balancing extracurricular activities with academic responsibilities to optimize performance.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for undergraduate physics students, academic advisors, and anyone considering a heavy course load in a single semester. It provides insights into managing challenging subjects while maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

What do you guys think about taking 3 upper level courses in one semester? Electricity and Magnetism, Thermodynamics, and Classical Mechanics? Any advice?

If you think you can handle the work load, then do it. I would always try hard subjects...and then become sleep deprived for the whole school year.

Are those the only classes you'd be taking, or would there be other classes too? What's your schedule like, are you working, and if so, how much?

If you have a lot of time on your hands, then you could probably handle those classes. If not, then be very afraid. Those will all take some significant time to do well.

I'm in choir, and student government also.

only you know whether or not you can handle it. as you know, if you can give each class the time it deserves, it shouldn't be a problem. the only difference between that and a regular upper-level load is that when you get done studying physics, you get to start studying physics again.

i thought i would have that problem with calc 2 and matrix theory and linear algebra at the same time this semester, but, they are different and so it is just nice to be able to study math twice as much
