3-Upper Level Physics Courses in 1 Semester

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility and implications of taking three upper-level physics courses—Electricity and Magnetism, Thermodynamics, and Classical Mechanics—in a single semester. Participants share their thoughts on workload management, personal schedules, and the potential impact on academic performance.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that if one feels capable of managing the workload, taking the courses could be feasible.
  • Others caution that the workload is significant and may lead to sleep deprivation if not managed properly.
  • A participant questions whether the three courses would be the only classes taken, implying that additional commitments could affect the ability to succeed in these courses.
  • One participant mentions their involvement in extracurricular activities, which could further complicate time management.
  • There is a perspective that if a student can dedicate adequate time to each class, it should not pose a problem, although the nature of the courses may require continuous study.
  • A participant shares their experience of managing multiple math courses simultaneously, suggesting that different subjects can sometimes complement each other in study routines.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the feasibility of taking three upper-level courses simultaneously, with no consensus on whether it is advisable. Some emphasize personal capability and time management, while others highlight potential challenges.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not provide specific details about their individual schedules or commitments, which may influence their perspectives on the workload. There is also a lack of consensus on the impact of extracurricular activities on academic performance.

Who May Find This Useful

Students considering a heavy course load in upper-level physics or those interested in time management strategies for balancing academic and extracurricular commitments.

What do you guys think about taking 3 upper level courses in one semester? Electricity and Magnetism, Thermodynamics, and Classical Mechanics? Any advice?

If you think you can handle the work load, then do it. I would always try hard subjects...and then become sleep deprived for the whole school year.

Are those the only classes you'd be taking, or would there be other classes too? What's your schedule like, are you working, and if so, how much?

If you have a lot of time on your hands, then you could probably handle those classes. If not, then be very afraid. Those will all take some significant time to do well.

I'm in choir, and student government also.

only you know whether or not you can handle it. as you know, if you can give each class the time it deserves, it shouldn't be a problem. the only difference between that and a regular upper-level load is that when you get done studying physics, you get to start studying physics again.

i thought i would have that problem with calc 2 and matrix theory and linear algebra at the same time this semester, but, they are different and so it is just nice to be able to study math twice as much
