SUMMARY

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 140km south of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea, at a depth of 10km, according to the US Geological Survey. Following this, a 5.9-magnitude aftershock occurred 109km southwest of Kokopo at a depth of 65km. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a warning for potential hazardous tsunami waves within 300km of the epicenter, although there was no tsunami threat to New Zealand.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of seismic activity and earthquake measurement scales
  • Familiarity with the US Geological Survey (USGS) reporting system
  • Knowledge of tsunami warning systems and protocols
  • Awareness of geographical regions prone to seismic events, specifically Papua New Guinea
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the impact of the 7.4-magnitude earthquake on local infrastructure and communities
  • Examine the geological factors contributing to seismic activity in Papua New Guinea
  • Learn about tsunami preparedness and response strategies in coastal regions
  • Investigate historical earthquake data and trends in the South Pacific region
USEFUL FOR

Seismologists, disaster response planners, geologists, and anyone interested in understanding the implications of seismic events and tsunami risks in the South Pacific region.

A powerful earthquake has rattled Papua New Guinea and officials are warning a tsunami is possible.

There was no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the earthquake.

The 7.4-magnitude quake struck about 140km south of the town of Kokopo in northeastern Papua New Guinea, at a depth of 10km, the US Geological Survey reported on Tuesday.

Another 5.9 earthquake followed at 1.54, USGS reports.

The aftershock hit 109km southwest of Kokopo, at a depth of 65km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 300km of the epicentre.
