White sharks scare me like nothing else... just seeing these pictures makes me shiver.

After first seeing the movie "Jaws", I decided that a shark attack would be one of the worst ways to go.

The summer that Jaws came out, the beaches in So Cal were virtually empty. I would still go, and for the most part it didn't bother me, but on occasion when a fish would run into me I about jumped out of my skin! And it didn't help when they caught a Great White not far offshore that was nearly as large as the fictional one in Jaws.

I learned to free dive for abalone off the coast of Northern California, the same summer that Jaws came out. Talk about bad timing! I was pretty danged nervous some of the times I dove, especially the first few times. And the first time that a sea lion decided to swim through our dive group was interesting. I was on the surface and saw what it was right away, so no problem. But one of my buddies was on the bottom, and turned around to see this big white-looking thing coming straight at him! Holy crappp!

I was actually in the water ab diving one day, at the same time that a friend of mine was diving about 8 miles south of where I was. He got bitten by a great white shark that day, and survived. I remember thinking... same exact time, only 8 miles away... could have been me.

I hate great white sharks.

I used to scuba dive off of Monterey CA, where there were seals that enjoyed a cruel trick. They'd come up from behind you and knock you a bit, then when you'd scream and let out a bunch of air they would play with the bubbles as they rose to the surface.

Funny, reeeeeal funny.

No kidding! That actually is pretty funny. Seals can get kind of mean sometimes.

Hey Lisa, you ever dive Monastery? I really enjoyed that Wall. Even found a VISA card out there one time, down about 45 feet. Returned it to VISA asking them to let me know if there was a juicy story behind it... no reply.

I know, seals can really be jerks!

No, I never dove at Monastery. I actually get a bit creeped out around kelp beds...I don't like anything blocking my vision when I'm in the water.

A co-worker of mine used to scuba-dive in a drysuit to collect Atlantic scallops. The water off the coast of Maine is very rich, and can be murky at even moderate depths, so you can be kind of claustrophobic down there. One day, I talked to the guy after he and his father returned from a weekend of winter dives and he had a pretty good story. He was at the bottom, collecting scallops in a mesh bag when suddenly, something hit him in the back of the head, dislodging his mask. He righted his mask and cleared it, and looked around with his dive-light, but saw nothing. Suddenly, he got hit in the back of the head, again with the same results. He thought a shark was bumping him and panicked and said that he practically jumped back into the boat with his father. He was gasping and shaking, when all of a sudden, a seal surfaced right where he had come up. Apparently, the seal regarded him as a competitor for the food.

Yeah, and that steep beach entry has killed more divers than all the great white shark attacks off of California's coast. Ironic.

Reminds me of an old girl friend from high school whose horse would come up from behind and bite her in the butt just to make her mad. You could damned near hear him laughing... He loved sneak attacks.

Im more worried about jelly fish than sharks. If one of those stings you in the right place it would make being able to swim nearly impossible. Also a riptide. Those can kill you fast too.

I once backstroked my way right into a school of jellyfish. Boy did that hurt! I was hit from head to toe, but luckily they weren't the really bad kind...

It is the only time in my life that I wanted to be peed upon.
