Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around recommendations for introductory books on tensor notation, particularly in the context of classical field theory and electrodynamics. Participants seek resources that can help them understand tensor notation and its applications in these subjects.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests suggestions for introductory books on tensor notation relevant to their M.Sc. studies in physics.
  • Another participant suggests that "tensor notation" may refer to the "index gymnastics" of Ricci calculus and recommends Landau-Lifshitz volume II as a comprehensive resource.
  • Additional participants provide links to various modern textbooks that cover similar topics, indicating a range of options beyond the classic Landau-Lifshitz text.
  • Some participants share links to specific books and resources, including an Arxiv paper on tensor analysis, which is noted as particularly relevant by one participant.
  • Another participant expresses enjoyment of a specific book, suggesting it may be a valuable resource as well.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the value of Landau-Lifshitz volume II as a foundational text, but multiple competing views exist regarding other recommended resources. The discussion remains open with various suggestions being put forth without a consensus on a single best option.

Contextual Notes

Some recommendations may depend on personal preferences or specific areas of focus within tensor notation, and the effectiveness of each resource may vary based on the reader's background and learning style.

I am doing my M.sc in physics.. In my course I have classical field theory and electrodynamics... I need to learn tensor notations to understand the above subjects...
Please tell me about some good introductory books to learn tensor notation to handle things in electrodynamics and classical field theory...

What do you mean by "tensor notation". If it's the "index gymnastics" of the Ricci calculus, you can take, e.g., Landau-Lifshitz vol. II (covers fundamental classical electrodynamics and general relativity). IMHO it's the best intro textbook for these topics.
