SUMMARY

This discussion centers on the challenges faced by a junior student from China seeking summer research opportunities in the USA in quantum information science (QIS). The student’s summer vacation begins at the end of June, conflicting with the early start dates of most summer research programs. Additionally, the discussion highlights the difficulties in obtaining a student visa for short-term research due to geopolitical issues, particularly for high-level subjects like Physics. The student also inquires about exchange programs as a potential solution for obtaining a visa.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of quantum information science (QIS)
  • Knowledge of US visa requirements for international students
  • Familiarity with summer research program timelines
  • Awareness of university exchange programs
NEXT STEPS
  • Research summer research programs in the USA that accommodate late start dates
  • Investigate the process and requirements for obtaining a US student visa
  • Explore university exchange programs that facilitate summer research opportunities
  • Learn about funding options for international students participating in research
USEFUL FOR

Undergraduate students in physics or related fields, international students seeking research opportunities in the USA, and academic advisors assisting students with study abroad programs.

Hilo, friends!
I am a junior student in China. I am getting to learn some about quantum information science (QIS). Next summer, I am planning to go to USA for summer research experience. But there is something wrong with the date. My summer vocation comes at the end of June exactly. However summer research programs in USA start much earlier. So, do you guys know there are some programs suitable for my time? Or, without this kind of program, can I have other kind of opportunities of participating in research in USA with money supplied. I do not have to get much money, Enough is good!

Thanks~~~

To work in the US you need a visa. As you pointed out, the timescales don't match yours, and now you have another problem.

Thus, I need a way out~

It's not going to happen for just a summer research program. Due to the unfortunate geopolitical situation between the US and China, student visas for high-level subjects like Physics are few and far in between, and for only ~3 months you'll just be denied, especially if you haven't even been accepted into a program yet.

Thank you very much~
Then what about the exchange programmes in summer between universities, how could they obtain visa?
