Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the challenges faced by a junior student from China seeking summer research opportunities in the USA, particularly in the field of quantum information science. The focus includes issues related to program timing, visa requirements, and potential alternatives for participating in research.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant highlights the mismatch between the student's summer vacation timing and the start dates of summer research programs in the USA.
  • Another participant emphasizes the necessity of obtaining a visa to work in the US, noting that the timing issue complicates this process.
  • Concerns are raised about the availability of student visas for high-level subjects like Physics, particularly in light of geopolitical tensions between the US and China.
  • A participant questions the feasibility of exchange programs between universities as a potential solution for obtaining a visa.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the challenges posed by visa requirements and the timing of summer research programs, but there is no consensus on viable solutions or alternatives.

Contextual Notes

The discussion reflects uncertainties regarding visa acquisition processes and the specific requirements for summer research participation, which may depend on individual circumstances and institutional policies.

Hilo, friends!
I am a junior student in China. I am getting to learn some about quantum information science (QIS). Next summer, I am planning to go to USA for summer research experience. But there is something wrong with the date. My summer vocation comes at the end of June exactly. However summer research programs in USA start much earlier. So, do you guys know there are some programs suitable for my time? Or, without this kind of program, can I have other kind of opportunities of participating in research in USA with money supplied. I do not have to get much money, Enough is good!

Thanks~~~

To work in the US you need a visa. As you pointed out, the timescales don't match yours, and now you have another problem.

Thus, I need a way out~

It's not going to happen for just a summer research program. Due to the unfortunate geopolitical situation between the US and China, student visas for high-level subjects like Physics are few and far in between, and for only ~3 months you'll just be denied, especially if you haven't even been accepted into a program yet.

Thank you very much~
Then what about the exchange programmes in summer between universities, how could they obtain visa?
