SUMMARY

On November 30, 2018, Anchorage, Alaska experienced two significant earthquakes measuring 7.0 and 5.8, leading to widespread damage and a disaster declaration by the governor. The quakes caused structural issues, including collapsed ceiling tiles in schools and buckled roads, with images showing severe pavement cracks. Electrical services were disrupted, affecting traffic lights and causing congestion throughout the city. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities or serious injuries, highlighting the effectiveness of Alaska's stringent building codes.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of earthquake measurement scales (e.g., Richter scale)
  • Familiarity with disaster response protocols
  • Knowledge of structural engineering principles related to seismic activity
  • Awareness of urban planning and infrastructure resilience
NEXT STEPS
  • Research seismic building codes in earthquake-prone areas
  • Explore disaster preparedness strategies for urban environments
  • Investigate advancements in earthquake-resistant infrastructure
  • Learn about the impact of earthquakes on urban traffic management
USEFUL FOR

Pretty scary! The damage seems extensive.

The governor of Alaska has issued a disaster declaration after back-to-back earthquakes measuring 7.0 and 5.8 rocked buildings and buckled roads Friday morning in Anchorage in Alaska.
...

Photographs posted to social media sites showed damage that included collapsed ceiling tiles at an Anchorage high school and buckled roads. One image showed a car stranded on an island of pavement, surrounded by cavernous cracks where the earthquake split the road.

The quake also disrupted electrical service and knocked out traffic lights in Anchorage, snarling traffic.

Thumbs up to Alaska’s strict building codes. Last I heard, no fatalities, no serious injuries, no major structural collapses of buildings. Now, if they would just get their act together and build roads that hold up intact when the ground drops out from under them!

Be sure to let them know when you invent anti-gravity.

I plan to use cartoon physics; everything should be OK so long as none of the drivers look down.
