SUMMARY

The discussion centers on calculating the speed of a proton moving eastward in Earth's magnetic field, which has a magnitude of 5.0 x 10-5 T. The user initially calculated the speed as 0.002 m/s but found it incorrect. The weight of the proton is confirmed to be 1.67 x 10-27 kg, and the user seeks clarification on the expression for magnetic force as a function of the proton's speed and how to equate it with the weight to find the correct speed.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of magnetic force and its relation to velocity
  • Knowledge of basic physics concepts including weight and mass
  • Familiarity with the formula for magnetic force: F = qvB
  • Basic understanding of protons and their properties in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the Lorentz force equation and its applications in magnetic fields
  • Learn how to derive the relationship between magnetic force and gravitational force
  • Research the properties of protons, including mass and charge
  • Explore examples of charged particle motion in magnetic fields
USEFUL FOR

Students and educators in physics, particularly those focusing on electromagnetism and particle dynamics, as well as anyone interested in understanding the behavior of charged particles in magnetic fields.

A proton moves eastward in the plane of Earth's magnetic equator so that its distance from the ground remains constant. What is the speed of the proton if Earth's magnetic field points north and has a magnitude of 5.0 10-5 T?

i got .002 m/s but it was wrong

What is the weight of the Proton? What is the expression for magnetic force as a function of the proton's speed? Equate those two forces.

the weight of the proton is 1.67e-27 but i still get the wrong answer i got 2.04e-4 can you work it out for me?

That is the mass of the proton (in kg). What is the weight? (ie. the downward force on the proton).
