    The heat capacity of air is very important in adiabatic compression, like in a diesel engine. Adiabitic compression in a diesel engine heats the air to the point where the fuel burns immediately on injection. See

    Look at any text in compressible flow theory and you'll see [tex]\gamma[/tex] popping up all over the place.
