AI Thread Summary
Baked beans are a favorite comfort food for many, but they can cause digestive issues, leading to gas and discomfort. Suggestions for alleviating these effects include using Beano, an enzyme that helps break down oligosaccharides in beans, and soaking beans in water before cooking to reduce gas production. Homemade baked beans are encouraged as a healthier alternative to canned varieties, which often come in tomato sauce. The discussion highlights the nostalgia and enjoyment associated with baked beans, despite the challenges they may present. Additionally, there are light-hearted comments about the cultural differences in food availability, such as the absence of certain items like tea in Germany. Overall, the conversation reflects a shared appreciation for baked beans while addressing their potential digestive drawbacks.

Do you have stuff like beano there? You sprinkle a few drops on the food before you eat and it's supposed to get rid of the gas.

Just enjoy it Woolie.

Beano is an enzyme that breaks down the olgiosaccharides that the body can't digest (this is what causes the gas). My biology teacher says that soaking the beans in water for a few hours will also do the trick, but YMMV.

Give this a try:

We soak them overnight, drain, rinse, and drain again before putting the beans in the pot and adding the other ingredients. It's easy to make your own baked beans, Woolie. You should give it a whirl if you haven't already. When I was in college, I had a tiny bean-pot that I got from a family member. It was just big enough to bake enough beans for a couple of meals and maybe a bean sandwich. Lost it in a move, sometime after I got married. We moved a LOT, chasing jobs in a really bad economy.
