Ball Bearing Selection for Wheel Hubs

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on selecting appropriate ball bearings for a new wheel hub design, emphasizing the importance of conducting a load analysis that considers various forces such as normal, friction, and lateral forces during turns. Participants suggest that a thorough understanding of these forces is crucial for making informed decisions about bearing selection. Additionally, sharing design drawings can facilitate more tailored advice and recommendations. The conversation highlights the need for foundational knowledge in mechanical design principles.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of load analysis in mechanical design
  • Familiarity with ball bearing specifications and types
  • Knowledge of forces acting on wheel hubs (normal, friction, lateral)
  • Basic skills in technical drawing or CAD software
NEXT STEPS
  • Research ball bearing load ratings and selection criteria
  • Explore the impact of lateral forces on wheel hub performance
  • Learn about CAD software for creating detailed design drawings
  • Investigate common failure modes of wheel bearings in automotive applications
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineers, automotive designers, and anyone involved in the design and analysis of wheel hubs and bearing systems.

Hello there guys

I'm trying to find out which ball bearings I have to use for a new wheel hub I am designing. What I'm currently doing is a load analysis for the axis but I am confused on how would the forces that affect the wheel (normal, friction, lateral force when the car takes a turn, etc) come into play into this analysis. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to PF.

Your question is quite general so you should first google the subject. Read things like this;

Please post a drawing of your present design. We can then get some idea of the stage of your design and suggest things you may need to consider.
