Hello, I'm a high school student, majoring in engineering, that just got into both Cal Poly SLO and Cal Poly Pomona (and UCR, but I love Cal Poly's learn by doing approach). I'm having trouble deciding between the two.
As a quick background, I'm a little psychologically messed up, so I actively worry about my mental health. Bad childhood, unresolved mental disorder, etc.
I hear Cal Poly SLO has a much better program, and when I visited it, I was pretty impressed by the campus and students. Everyone shared the same mentality, the professors seemed welcoming and qualified, and the class sizes seemed small. However, the area around the campus was so secluded and quiet, I felt sick and suffocating. I visited the surrounding area, and although Santa Maria at least felt a little closer to my hometown in LA, but it still felt very wrong.
Down at Cal Poly Pomona, I hear rumors the administration is falling apart, and that it is generally not doing so well. However, it's still in the greater LA area, where I feel more comfortable in (I love big cities, and exploring them; I dream to live in a place like Tokyo). I think I might stay more sane there.
But would I be sacrificing too great an opportunity at SLO? Or maybe everyone has gone through this and I should adjust soon? Ideally, I'd go to Pomona, then transfer to SLO after I sort myself out, but I'm not sure if that's possible.
