Calculating Deflection at Point P with Fixed Beams at Point X

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on calculating deflection at point P for fixed beams subjected to a load P applied at point Y. The participants emphasize the importance of evaluating equivalent loads at the midpoint to understand the differences in deflection at point P. It is established that the load acts downward in both scenarios, and the position relative to the neutral axis significantly affects the calculations. The conversation highlights the need for precise calculations of equivalent forces at section P to accurately determine deflection.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of beam theory and fixed beam conditions
  • Knowledge of load application and its effects on deflection
  • Familiarity with neutral axis concepts in structural engineering
  • Proficiency in calculating equivalent loads and forces
NEXT STEPS
  • Research methods for calculating deflection in fixed beams
  • Study the principles of equivalent loads and their applications
  • Learn about the neutral axis and its role in beam deflection
  • Explore software tools for structural analysis, such as SAP2000 or ANSYS
USEFUL FOR

Structural engineers, civil engineering students, and professionals involved in beam design and analysis will benefit from this discussion.

the beams are fixed at point X. Load P is applied at Y. How different would be the deflections at P.

I think that we would want to make an equivalent load at the mid point and evaluate how different that would be and then carry that through. (so our load at point Y is at a different point relative to the neutral axis, assuming we are both times pushing down correct??)

The load is acting down in both cases at Y.
Cant really makeout how to calculate eq. forces at the section P.
