Calculating % Yield of Ester in Chemistry Lab

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around calculating the percentage yield of an ester in a chemistry lab context, specifically when the reaction is allowed to reach equilibrium without removing products. Participants are exploring the implications of equilibrium on yield and the factors influencing it.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions whether all reactants are converted to products if the reaction reaches equilibrium.
  • Another participant seeks clarification on the basis of comparison for the yield, asking "relative to what?"
  • Further responses emphasize the ambiguity of the initial question regarding yield, suggesting a need for clearer context.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express uncertainty and confusion regarding the concept of yield in relation to equilibrium, indicating that multiple views and interpretations remain unresolved.

Contextual Notes

The discussion lacks clarity on the definitions of yield and equilibrium in this context, and there are unresolved assumptions regarding the comparison points for yield calculations.

% yield ester

I'm having a problem with my chemistry lab report. the question is: What would the % yield of ester be if the reaction were simply allowed to equilibrate (i.e. no products are
removed)?
I think the the yield is going to smaller but i don't know why.
pls help

If the reaction mixture is allowed to reach the equilibrium, are all reactants converted to final products?

relative to what?

You think the yield will be smaller relative to what? Relative to Stopping the rxn early?
