SUMMARY

A heavy-duty toilet plunger can indeed break glass if swung with sufficient force. The rubber material of the plunger may absorb some impact, but a strong swing from a physically capable individual can generate enough kinetic energy to shatter glass, especially if aimed at a vulnerable point. This scenario is plausible and can be utilized effectively in storytelling to create tension or drama.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics principles, particularly kinetic energy and impact force.
  • Familiarity with materials science, specifically the properties of rubber and glass.
  • Knowledge of storytelling techniques that involve realistic scenarios.
  • Experience in writing action sequences that involve physical objects.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the physics of impact forces and how they apply to different materials.
  • Explore the properties of glass, including its tensile strength and common failure points.
  • Study effective action writing techniques to enhance realism in storytelling.
  • Investigate the use of everyday objects as weapons in fiction for dramatic effect.
USEFUL FOR

Writers, particularly those crafting action or suspense narratives, as well as educators and students interested in physics and material science.

It's been a while since I've been in science class and I was wondering if this was theoretically possible. It's so specific because I'm writing a story using this scenario and now am wondering if it's completely unrealistic... What are your thoughts?

Here's the question: Let's say you have a heavy duty toilet plunger. And let's say you feel like hurling it, like a baseball bat, into a large glass mirror. You're a strong person, so it's going to be a strong swing. And as I said, it's a heavy duty toilet plunger. Now would it break the glass or would the rubber of the plunger just absorb the impact?

It can break the glass if the force is strong enough.
