SUMMARY

Safe sun exposure, defined as approximately 15 minutes a few times a week without sunscreen, is supported by scientists as beneficial for health, particularly in preventing cancer. Dr. Edward Giovannucci, a Harvard University professor, presented research at the American Association for Cancer Research meeting indicating that vitamin D may prevent 30 deaths for every one caused by skin cancer. This perspective challenges the conventional view on sun exposure and highlights the potential health benefits of vitamin D supplementation.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of vitamin D's role in health
  • Knowledge of skin cancer risks and prevention strategies
  • Familiarity with the American Association for Cancer Research and its findings
  • Basic concepts of nutritional science
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the effects of vitamin D on cancer prevention
  • Explore guidelines for safe sun exposure practices
  • Investigate the relationship between vitamin D levels and overall health
  • Review recent studies presented at the American Association for Cancer Research meetings
USEFUL FOR

Health professionals, researchers in oncology and nutrition, individuals interested in cancer prevention strategies, and anyone looking to understand the health implications of sun exposure.

...No one is suggesting that people fry on a beach. But many scientists believe that "safe sun" - 15 minutes or so a few times a week without sunscreen - is not only possible but helpful to health.

One is Dr. Edward Giovannucci, a Harvard University professor of medicine and nutrition who laid out his case in a keynote lecture at a recent American Association for Cancer Research meeting in Anaheim, Calif.

His research suggests that vitamin D might help prevent 30 deaths for each one caused by skin cancer. [continued]

I don't remember what I was watching.. but I think it was a show on discovery. The man claimed to cure his cancer by taking higher than normal doses of vitamin D..
