I would like to know what is the most recommended texts on General relativity . Would Gravitation by Kip Thorne be one of the texts?

The "classic" books are probably the previously mentioned Gravitation by Misner, Thorne & Wheeler; Steve Weinberg's Gravitation and Cosmology (he's got a new book on cosmology coming out soon), The Large Scale Structure of Spacetime by Hawking and Ellis, and Wald's General Relativity.

For a first book, I'd recommend Hartle's Gravity, and I also really like Ohanian & Ruffini's Gravitation and Spacetime.
