SUMMARY

Connecting two computer power supplies in series to increase voltage is not feasible due to the grounding configuration of power supplies. Each power supply has its output voltage referenced to ground, meaning that when attempting to connect them in series, the ground points are tied together, preventing the desired voltage increase. Therefore, using power supplies in this manner is not recommended.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electrical grounding principles
  • Knowledge of computer power supply specifications
  • Familiarity with voltage and current concepts
  • Basic electronics knowledge
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the differences between series and parallel connections in electrical circuits
  • Learn about power supply design and output configurations
  • Explore safe methods for increasing voltage using transformers
  • Investigate alternative solutions for achieving higher voltage requirements in computer systems
USEFUL FOR

Electronics enthusiasts, computer hardware engineers, and anyone involved in power supply design or modification.

is it possible to connect two computer power supplies together in series to increase the voltage like with batteries or does that not work with power supplies?

No, that would not work.

This is because each of the voltages you can get out of such a power supply has one side returned to ground.

So, on the two power supplies, all these ground points are joined together and you can't put them in series.

thanks
