Plz can anyone here tell me something general things about DC series motor Drum Controller? I've been trying to find it out but all in vain! Plz help

Do you mean Drum as in Percussion?
 
Or maybe a big rotating drum like a cement mixer?
 
Oh no! by drum controller I mean a starter like device. Perhaps it is used instead of a 3 point starter to run a DC series machine, but iam not sure. I want accurate facts like why the name drum? etc.
