Disadvatage of PIV measurment system

I'm trying to find out some information on the piv system and how it compares to other systems of measurement. Essentially I want to know if anyone knws any disadvantages of the piv (Particle image velocimetry) system.

Well for one you will need a laser sheet which usually requires a pretty powerful laser = very expensive. You also need specialized image tracking software.
Second is that not all flows allow this technique. I have never heard of supersonic PIV for instance.
