Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the nature of electromagnetic (EM) waves, specifically whether all wavelengths of the EM spectrum have photons, travel at the speed of light, and experience the Doppler effect or redshift. The inquiry also includes a hypothetical scenario regarding the perception of infrared light as red when moving at high speeds towards it.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants assert that all wavelengths of the EM spectrum have photons.
  • Others claim that all wavelengths travel at the speed of light.
  • There is a consensus among some that all wavelengths experience the Doppler effect or redshift.
  • A hypothetical scenario is proposed regarding the possibility of perceiving infrared light as red when traveling towards it at high speeds.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the claims regarding photons, speed of light, and the Doppler effect, but the hypothetical scenario remains a point of exploration without definitive resolution.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not address the implications of relativistic effects on perception or the specifics of how redshift operates across different wavelengths.

do all wavelengths of the EM spectrum have photons? do all wavelengths travel at the speed of light? do all wavelength experience the "Doppler effect" or "redshift" or only the spectrum of visible light i.e. could i travel really fast towards infrared and all of a sudden see it as red (i know the speeds are retarded but humor me please)? just curious...
