Does the current increase or decrease through the resistor ?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on a circuit analysis problem involving a variable resistor R and its effect on current distribution in a parallel circuit. The user initially believes that increasing resistance R leads to an increase in current through resistor R1 and a decrease through R2. However, upon reevaluation, the user acknowledges a misunderstanding regarding the current path when the slider is positioned at point A, which affects the overall current flow. The correct interpretation aligns with the answer key, indicating that the user must carefully analyze the circuit schematic to arrive at the right conclusion.

The Attempt at a Solution

This looks to be a simple problem but the answer key has left me wondering whether I am thinking correctly .

I get option 1) whereas answer key states option 3) .

Since the variable resistance R increases , the resistance across the parallel branch (R2+R) increases .This leads to a higher voltage drop across R1 .As a result current increases in R1 .

Since the overall current from the battery decreases and current through R1 increases , current through R2 decreases .

I am getting option 1) . Is that right ?

Look at the circuit schematic carefully. If the slider is all the way to point A, what path does the current from A to B take?

Just after I had posted this , I realized the mistake . I should have been more careful .

Thanks !
