At least according to this article, https://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/world/24765825/extra-terrestrial-life-discovered-in-outer-space/

The team of Russian experts stumbled across the startling find during a routine cleaning and polishing mission of the outside surface of the ISS.

"We have found traces of sea plankton and microscopic particles on the illuminator surface.”

An interesting find, to say the least!

Was this the first cleaning of the surface?
Regular cleaning would rule out contamination from the surface.
Article does really talk about the cleaning schedule.

Forbes article about Russia ISS claims

Sorry to mods if this is still not appropriate, but here is a Forbes article seemingly debunking some claims released by chief of the Russian ISS orbital mission Vladimir Solovyev regarding "sea plankton" found outside ISS. Propaganda move on Russia's part?

Forbes article

You’ve probably seen the fantastical headlines flying around social media or the web this week that Russian cosmonauts have reported discovering traces of sea plankton living on the exterior of the International Space Station, exposed to the harsh, airless vacuum of space. The only problem is that the Russians’ American ISS roommates from NASA don’t seem to agree with the assessment that there’s some sort of microscopic space barnacles clinging to their orbiting home.
