Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around determining the focal length of a lens when it is moved from a distance of 20cm to 15cm from an object, while maintaining the same magnification of the image.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants discuss the relationship between object distance, image distance, and magnification, questioning what equations might apply to this scenario.

Discussion Status

Some participants have provided hints regarding relevant equations, while others express a desire for more guidance. There is an ongoing exploration of the problem without a clear consensus on the approach to take.

Contextual Notes

There is a mention of forum rules regarding the provision of help, emphasizing that assistance should only be given after the questioner demonstrates some effort in solving the problem.

If a lens is moved towards the object from a distance of 20cm to 15cm, the magnification of the image remains the same. What is the focal length of the lens?

Sorry I am new here so please forgive me if I have violated any rules.

Hi Euler_Euclid! Welcome to PF!

Hint: what equations do you know that apply to distance, magnification, and focal length?

Can you please help me a little more?

FYI:

On helping with questions: Any and all assistance given to homework assignments or textbook style exercises should be given only after the questioner has shown some effort in solving the problem. If no attempt is made then the questioner should be asked to provide one before any assistance is given. Under no circumstances should complete solutions be provided to a questioner, whether or not an attempt has been made.
