SUMMARY

The discussion centers on finding a free 3D structure design simulation tool for modeling balsa wood projects. Users suggest that while 2D programs can be utilized for certain designs, a dedicated 3D software is preferable for complex structures like space frames or trusses. RISA 3D is mentioned as a viable option, offering a 30-day trial, although it may have limitations. The emphasis is on the need for software that allows for effective testing of designs before physical assembly.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of balsa wood modeling techniques
  • Familiarity with structural design concepts
  • Knowledge of 2D and 3D modeling software
  • Basic principles of truss and space frame structures
NEXT STEPS
  • Research free 3D modeling software options for structural design
  • Explore RISA 3D's features and trial limitations
  • Learn about the principles of truss design and analysis
  • Investigate alternative software with 3D capabilities for balsa wood modeling
USEFUL FOR

Hobbyists, model builders, and designers interested in balsa wood projects, as well as engineers looking for free tools to simulate structural designs.

I am building a little balsa wood model. I was hoping there was a program to help me test designs before I spend hours gluing sticks together.

I've used a 2d program for testing bridge designs, but I've never seen a 3d version. I'm hoping this question is cake walk for you guys.

Also, I prefer free :)

You might be able to use the 2d anyway depending on what your structure is, and what the program your using allows. If you model is planar and those planes are orthogonal, there isn't really interaction in theory anyway... but if you're making a space frame or truss, then its probably got more complex things going on.

There are trial versions of some nice 3d structural design software, I know RISA 3d has a 30 day trial. I'm sure there are others, course they often have limits.
