Is it ok to email other places to ask about your application given that you have an offer in hand and need to make a decision soon?
This discussion focuses on undergraduate research experiences (REUs) in geometry and topology, highlighting programs at Williams, Cornell, Tennessee, and Indiana. Participants share insights on the competitive nature of REU applications, emphasizing the importance of strong letters of recommendation and personal connections with professors. The conversation reveals that many students seek serious academic environments rather than casual summer experiences, with specific mention of Cornell's rigorous program and its focus on meaningful research topics.
PREREQUISITESUndergraduate students interested in pursuing research opportunities in mathematics, particularly in geometry and topology, as well as those seeking guidance on the REU application process.

You should definitely email the programs you haven't heard from. When I emailed other programs to withdraw my application (the ones I hadn't hear back from), one of them emailed me back offering a position even though I told them I was picking another one and their deadline had not pass yet.
