Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around issues related to installing software on a Windows XP system, specifically focusing on problems encountered with the installation process and the CD Rom drive functionality. Participants explore potential causes and solutions for the installation failure and the CD Rom drive's performance.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes encountering an error message during the installation process that provides no specific information about the failure.
  • Another participant asks for clarification on whether the installation is being performed via the internet or a CD, suggesting alternatives based on the method of installation.
  • There is a suggestion to check if autorun is enabled for the CD, and instructions are provided on how to manually access the installation files.
  • Participants inquire about the specific software being installed, with one confirming it is an older version of PageMaker 6.5.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have not reached a consensus on the cause of the installation issue, and multiple suggestions and inquiries remain without resolution.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations regarding the lack of specific error messages and the potential dependency on the software's compatibility with Windows XP. The discussion does not clarify whether the installation issue is related to the software itself or the system's configuration.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be useful for users experiencing similar installation issues on older Windows systems, particularly with software that may have compatibility concerns.

I tried installing (actually re-installing) a package on my home system, which has XP. When the install was started, it gives the "loading InstallShield" message, and just as it finishes it gives the familiar jarring sound and a tiny message box with nothing but an "X" and the "OK" click button. Once clicked, everything goes away. It gives no hint what its problem is. Can anybody help?

BTW: Yesterday I had a hard time opening the CD Rom drive.

So you are having trouble installing software?

Yes. When I click on the message box, the install goes away. If I don't I can't do anything.

Are you installing this package through the internet, or through a CD? If you are downloading it from the internet try to download from another source. If you are installing from a CD check if autorun is enabled. If you don't know how to enable it go to the the CD drive in "My Computer" typically D:\ and open it. Inside you should find a file called setup.exe or install.exe.

What is the software you're trying to install and what is it for? Is it a driver package?

Autorun is enabled. In fact, when the CD is inserted it comes up easily. Then, when the program is selected to install, Installshield stares and apparently finishes, but then the problem message box comes. When the OK is clicked, the installshield goes away and nothing else happens.
