Heat of Condensation: Solving Methanol Homework

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the heat of condensation for methanol, which is equal to the negative of its heat of vaporization. The participant attempted to find the heat of vaporization but struggled to arrive at an answer that matched the provided choices. They confirmed that their approach was correct, indicating that option (a) was likely the correct answer based on their calculations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of thermodynamics principles, specifically heat transfer.
  • Familiarity with the concept of heat of vaporization and condensation.
  • Basic algebra skills for manipulating equations.
  • Knowledge of methanol's physical properties.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the heat of vaporization for methanol using reliable chemical databases.
  • Study the principles of thermodynamics related to phase changes.
  • Practice problems involving heat transfer in condensation and vaporization processes.
  • Explore the implications of heat of condensation in real-world applications, such as distillation.
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, educators, and professionals involved in thermodynamics or chemical engineering who are looking to deepen their understanding of phase change calculations.

Homework Equations

Heat of condensation = -(heat of vaporization)

The Attempt at a Solution

Okay, so I tried to find the heat of vaporization. Then I to took the negative of it since the process is condensation, and energy is being released from the methanol as it condenses into a liquid. I was wondering if my process was right since I tried multiple times, unsuccessfully, to even get an answer that was in the answer choices.

I just skimmed and it looks OK to me. (a) seems to be the right answer.
