SUMMARY

Every Nash Equilibrium (NE) in the Centipede Game necessitates that players defect in the first period. This conclusion is derived from the backward induction method, which demonstrates that any strategy profile that includes selling in the first period qualifies as a Nash Equilibrium. The conditions for a strategy pair to be considered a NE include mutual best responses where neither player can benefit by unilaterally changing their strategy.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Nash Equilibrium in game theory
  • Familiarity with the Centipede Game mechanics
  • Knowledge of backward induction as a proof technique
  • Concept of Subgame Perfect Nash Equilibrium (SPNE)
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of Nash Equilibrium in game theory
  • Explore the Centipede Game and its strategic implications
  • Learn about backward induction and its applications in game theory
  • Investigate Subgame Perfect Nash Equilibrium (SPNE) and its significance
USEFUL FOR

Game theorists, economics students, and anyone interested in strategic decision-making and equilibrium concepts in competitive scenarios.

Hi guys,

I would much appreciate your help. Could anyone explain to me how is it possible to prove that every Nash Equilibrium in Centipede involves players defecting in the first period. Also, is any strategy profile involving selling in the first period a NE? I know how to get unique SPNE, but the other problem seems confusing.

Thanks a lot!

What are the conditions a strategy pair has to satisfy in order to be a NE?
