this was on the aime, and i was wondering how to factor it without a calculator.
x^4-4x^3+6x^2-4x=2005
x^4-4x^3+6x^2-4x=2005
The discussion revolves around factoring a quartic equation, specifically the equation x^4 - 4x^3 + 6x^2 - 4x = 2005, without the use of a calculator. Participants explore various methods and approaches to solve the equation, including hints related to Pascal's triangle and the use of complex roots.
Participants express a variety of viewpoints and methods regarding the quartic equation, with no clear consensus on the best approach. Some methods are debated, and there is uncertainty about the necessity of certain techniques like Newton's Method.
Limitations include the reliance on approximations for roots and the potential for misunderstanding the necessity of certain methods. The discussion includes various assumptions about the nature of the roots and the methods used to find them.
This discussion may be of interest to students preparing for math competitions, particularly those focusing on polynomial equations and root-finding techniques.

i can add one to each side and have:
x^4-4x^3+6x^2-4x+1=2006
now, i can use the (x-1)^4
(x-1)^4=2006?
i could have gotten at least a 6, but i can not add without a calculator.
