Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around strategies for preparing for the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) as a high school freshman. Participants share various approaches, resources, and personal experiences related to preparation for the competition.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a willingness to work hard and seeks advice on preparation methods for the IPhO.
  • Another participant suggests solving challenging problems, recommending Irodov as a valuable resource, while noting the importance of having learned the relevant material first.
  • A different participant emphasizes the need to study calculus-based physics, sharing their personal experience of preparing for the US Physics Team and the extensive reading of Serway's textbook.
  • One participant offers a blog with physics problems and solutions, suggesting that it could be beneficial for improving physics skills and includes a link to their blog with additional IPhO problems.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of solving difficult problems and studying relevant material, but there are varied opinions on specific resources and methods for preparation.

Contextual Notes

Some participants assume familiarity with calculus and specific textbooks, which may not be universally applicable to all freshmen. The discussion does not resolve which resources are definitively the best for preparation.

Who May Find This Useful

Freshmen interested in participating in the International Physics Olympiad, educators looking for resources to recommend, and students seeking to enhance their problem-solving skills in physics.

Prepare by solving lots of hard problems, that's all you can do, I hear that Irodov is an excellent source of problems. This assumes you've learned the material that is covered in the competition but If you haven't done that then that's the obvious first step.

Study as much calculus based physics as possible. I got into the semi-final round for the US Physics Team in 2000, but didn't get past the final round of selections. I think I read Serway's textbook about a dozen times.

I have a blog that contains some physics problems and solutions. I think its good to improve your physics skill. Also, I have a download link to some IPhO problems on the same blog.
Here is the link of my blog: http://collectionofphysicsproblems.blogspot.com"

I hope it would be useful.
