Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around methods to waterproof a soldered wire connection, particularly in the context of a 230V AC application. Participants explore various materials and techniques suitable for ensuring water resistance in electrical connections.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Experimental/applied

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests using self-sealing silicone tape, noting its ability to fuse and create a watertight seal when applied correctly.
  • Several participants inquire about the specifics of the voltage and current involved, indicating a concern for safety and compliance with electrical standards.
  • A later reply mentions that the wires carry 230VAC for power, raising questions about compliance with local electrical codes for outdoor installations.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express concern regarding the safety and compliance of the installation, but there is no consensus on the best waterproofing method or the adequacy of the proposed solutions.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved questions about local electrical codes and the suitability of the proposed waterproofing methods for the specific application.

Hello, I'm trying to find the best way to waterproof a wire connection.

As you can see in the image I've got three wires connected together with a bit of electrical tape in place. I can't fit a standard junction box because the wires are soldered together.

Is there anything I could use that would make this more waterproof?

Many thanks!

Edit: Referring to 230v AC, 6.8 Amps.

Self sealing silicone tape might do the trick. It is stretchy and when it contacts itself will fuse and produce a water tight seal if it has good contact on clean smooth surfaces. Permatex, Rustoleum, Duck Brand and others make a 1 inch wide product and should be available at home center like Home Depot or Lowes in the US.

Just what kind of signal/voltage/current is involved here?

May we know what kind of voltage travels on those wires?

@TechTree informed me that the wires are 230VAC, for carrying power.

I do not believe that installation can comply with local electrical codes for outdoor power.
