How can we boil water without heating it?

SUMMARY

This discussion centers on the phenomenon of boiling water without traditional heating methods. It highlights the role of pressure in determining the boiling point of liquids, specifically referencing a demonstration from "Mr. Wizard" where water is boiled by creating a vacuum and then applying an ice cube to the flask. The process involves initially boiling water to remove air, creating a vacuum, and then inducing boiling by lowering the pressure with an ice cube. This illustrates the scientific principle that boiling can occur at lower temperatures under reduced pressure conditions.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of boiling point and phase changes in liquids
  • Familiarity with vacuum creation techniques
  • Basic knowledge of pressure and its effects on liquids
  • Experience with scientific demonstrations and experiments
NEXT STEPS
  • Research vacuum pump operation and applications
  • Explore the principles of phase transitions in thermodynamics
  • Learn about the effects of pressure on boiling points using real-world examples
  • Investigate other methods of inducing boiling without heat, such as using low-pressure environments
USEFUL FOR

Students in physics or chemistry, educators demonstrating scientific principles, and anyone interested in experimental science and thermodynamics.

What is boiling? What does it mean when one says a liquid is "boiling"?

I remember a "Mr. Wizard" where they boiled water with an ice cube. First they boiled the water in a flask to get all of the air out and leave only water vapor. Then they corked the flask and took it off the flame. It stopped boiling. Then they rubbed it with an ice cube on the top of the flask and it quickly started boiling again.

Pressure play a part in determine the boiling pt of liquid.
Create a vacuum with water inside it, u will see the water boil.
