SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating I band magnitudes from average absolute J band magnitudes for brown dwarf stars. The user initially expressed uncertainty but later identified the need to find I-J values, which are essential for the conversion. The process involves using established color indices to derive the desired magnitudes. The user is encouraged to seek further assistance if challenges arise during the calculation.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of photometric systems, specifically J and I bands.
  • Familiarity with color indices in astrophysics.
  • Knowledge of brown dwarf spectral types and their characteristics.
  • Basic mathematical skills for magnitude calculations.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the method for calculating I-J color indices in astrophysics.
  • Explore the relationship between spectral types and photometric magnitudes.
  • Study the conversion formulas for different photometric bands.
  • Investigate tools for analyzing astronomical data, such as Python libraries for astrophysics.
USEFUL FOR

Astronomers, astrophysics students, and researchers working with brown dwarf stars and photometric data analysis.

I have a list average absolute J band magnitudes for brown dwarf stars of different spectral types. I need to find the corresponding I band magnitudes. How do I do this? I don't have the faintest idea.

Thanks.

OK, I just found out that I need to find the I-J values, which can be easily found. I'll post again if I have trouble.
