How Do You Calculate the Acceleration of This Inflated Balloon?

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around calculating the acceleration of an inflated balloon given its mass, the mass of helium, volume, and the density of air. The problem is situated within the context of fluid dynamics and forces acting on the balloon as it ascends.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants discuss the calculations for buoyant force and gravitational force, questioning the accuracy of the provided answer key. There is an exploration of the net force and its relation to acceleration.

Discussion Status

Participants express skepticism about the answer key's correctness and seek validation of their calculations. There is a back-and-forth regarding the accuracy of the computed acceleration, with some participants affirming each other's conclusions.

Contextual Notes

Participants are operating under the assumption that air resistance is negligible, and there is a focus on the correctness of the calculations rather than the methodology itself.

Homework Statement

The mass of an empty balloon is 0.41 kg it got inflated with 0.0938 kg of helium which ressulted in his volume being 0.524 m^3 after being inflated then left to ascend considering the air's density is constant and is 1.30 kg/m^3 what is the acceleration of the balloon (dont consider air resistance)[/B]

Homework Equations

Fb=density*volume*g
Fg=mg
Fnet
a=Fnet/m

The Attempt at a Solution

Fb=1.30*0.524*9.81=6.68257N
Fg=(0.41+0.0938)9.81=4.94N
6.68-4.94=1.74N
1.74/(0.41+0.0938)=3.45 m/s^2
Tye answer sheet says its 16.4?[/B]
