How Does an Auto Transformer Function?

Do you mean a variable autotransformer like a Variac?

Well a variac is just an autotransformer with a wiper for the output voltage tap. The wiper typically can make contact to windings both below (lower voltage) and above (higher voltage) the input voltage tap. I googled transformer theory autotransformer, and got lots of hits.
