SUMMARY

The problem involves balancing a man weighing 80 kg and a boy weighing 40 kg on a uniform board with a mass of 20 kg. To achieve balance, the man must stand 1.6 meters from the center of the board. The solution requires understanding the concept of center of mass and how the weights of the individuals and the board affect the balance point. The absence of the board's length means the answer is expressed in terms of distance from the center.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of center of mass principles
  • Basic knowledge of torque and equilibrium
  • Familiarity with uniform mass distribution
  • Ability to set up and solve algebraic equations
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the concept of center of mass in physics
  • Learn about torque and its application in balancing systems
  • Explore problems involving uniform mass distribution
  • Practice solving equilibrium problems with varying weights
USEFUL FOR

Students in physics, educators teaching mechanics, and anyone interested in understanding balance and center of mass in physical systems.

Hi,
Could anyone please help me with this question:
A man with mass of 80 kg wants to balance a 40 kg boy who is standing at the end of the board.
If the board is uniform and has a mass of 20 kg how far from the middle in meters, x, must the man stand
so that he and the boy balance each other?

Homework Equations

-centre of mass?

The Attempt at a Solution

answer is 1.6 but i don't know how to get to it

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Michael

I think you have slightly miss-stated the question.
If the board was balanced at the middle then it's weight wouldn't matter and the man would have to stand half way between the end and the middle. Since you aren't given the actual length of the board then the answer would have to be in terms of the length.
