How many times is blood filtered in the kidney?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the frequency and volume of blood filtration in the kidneys, specifically focusing on how many times blood is filtered based on given parameters such as body mass and plasma volume. The scope includes mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding related to kidney function and blood composition.

Discussion Character

  • Mathematical reasoning, Conceptual clarification, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant calculates that a person weighing 60 kg has approximately 5 liters of blood, leading to a discussion on how many times the plasma is filtered in a day.
  • Another participant questions how the teacher derived that plasma is filtered 60 times in 24 hours, seeking clarification on the calculation process.
  • A third participant states that if the kidneys filter 7.5 liters of blood per hour, this results in a total of 180 liters filtered in 24 hours, and calculates that this corresponds to 99 liters of plasma.
  • There is a request for guidance on what steps to take next in the calculations or understanding of the topic.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express uncertainty about the calculations and the reasoning behind the frequency of plasma filtration, indicating that there is no consensus on the methodology or results presented.

Contextual Notes

Some calculations depend on assumptions about blood volume and plasma percentage, which may vary among individuals. The discussion does not resolve how the teacher arrived at specific filtration rates or volumes.

Who May Find This Useful

Students studying human physiology, particularly those interested in kidney function and blood filtration processes, as well as those working on related homework problems.

The blood that circulates in our body is about 1/12 of our mass. If the kidneys filter 7.5 liter of blood a hour, then how many times does it filter in the kidney the whole blood of a person will mass 60kg?
Here's what my teacher did:
1/12*60=5 liter blood
0.55*5=2.75 liter plasma of blood.
The plasma is filtered 60 times is 24 hours. (how did she find that?)
24 hours ->60 times the plasma filters
1 hour -> x
x=2.5 times
Do you understand her explanation? What should I do next?

If the kidneys filter 7.5 liters of blood in one hour, how many liters do they filter in 24 hours? How many times larger is this than the volume of plasma?

In 24 hours 180 liters blood and 0.55*180=99 liters plasma.

What should I do next?
