Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a homework problem involving the production of zinc sulfide from zinc and sulfur. Participants explore the necessary steps to determine the amount of zinc sulfide produced when 5.0 g of each reactant is used, focusing on concepts such as limiting reagents and balanced chemical equations.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related, Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks if there is an equation to solve the problem, referencing the law of constant composition.
  • Another participant clarifies that a chemical equation is needed to identify the limiting reagent.
  • There is a suggestion that a balanced chemical equation is necessary to proceed with the calculations.
  • A participant provides a simplified equation, indicating the reactants and the product: Zn + S → ZnS, noting that the masses of the reactants do not factor into the equation itself.
  • Another participant inquires about converting grams to moles as a step in the calculation process.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need for a balanced chemical equation and the concept of limiting reagents, but the discussion remains unresolved regarding the specific calculations and conversions needed to find the amount of zinc sulfide produced.

Contextual Notes

There is an implicit assumption that participants understand the concepts of limiting reagents and mole conversions, but these steps have not been fully detailed or resolved in the discussion.

Homework Statement

5.0 g of Zn is heated with an equal amount of S, bow much zinc sulfide is produced?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

Wouldn't there be an equation to solve this problem? I know law of constant composition is an observation that the elemental composition of a pure compound is always the same.

By equation do you mean a chemical equation?

You have 5.0 g of Zn and 5.0 g of S, you need to find out which is the limiting reagent.

Okay, then do you have to do a balanced chemical equation?

I would start with that first.

5 Zn --> 5 S

Do you mean something like this? I really do appreciate this a lot, thanks for your help

Zn and S are the reactants, so they go on the left side.

Zn + S → ZnS
(now you know what the equation is)

The masses of the reactants don't have a part in the equation itself at all.

ok thanks a lot for this

Do you know how to convert grams of a substance to moles? I would first start changing all the grams to moles.
