How to Determine the Weight of a Board Suspended by a Spring?

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The problem involves determining the weight of a board that is suspended by a vertical spring, with a mass hanging from it. The setup includes the board touching the ground at one corner, and the relationship between the forces acting on the board and the spring is being explored.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants discuss the relevance of the spring in the context of the problem, questioning what specific facts or measurements are provided that could influence the analysis, such as spring extension or oscillation characteristics.

Discussion Status

The discussion is ongoing, with participants seeking to clarify the given information and its implications for solving the problem. There is an emphasis on understanding the role of the spring and the conditions of the setup.

Contextual Notes

Participants note the importance of specific details about the spring and the system, indicating that the solution may depend on additional information that has not yet been provided.

Homework Statement

This is a more conceptual question so I just need the steps for this. Basically the board is hanging from the ceiling by a spring, with only its bottom corner touching the ground. Near the middle (but not exactly) there is mass hanging off of the board. I need to find out how much the board weighs

Homework Equations

Torque = Force x Distance, maybe Spring equations.

The Attempt at a Solution

Understand how to get the force of the hanging mass, but not if the spring has any relevance to this other than being another force

It depends what facts you are given.
Is the spring vertical?

Yes the spring is vertical

You did not answer my other (implied) question. What facts are given? E.g., you might be given the spring extension, or something about oscillation, etc.
