The recent Windows Update included an optional Bing Desktop, which has sparked frustration among users regarding Microsoft's update practices. Many express annoyance over mandatory updates that can interrupt work, especially when updates require lengthy installation times and automatic reboots without saving open work. Users are encouraged to change their update settings to manual to avoid unexpected interruptions. The default setting for Windows updates is to install automatically, which some argue should be adjusted to better accommodate user preferences. Discussions also highlight the challenges of managing updates for less tech-savvy users and the potential security risks associated with outdated systems. Additionally, there are comparisons made between Windows and Mac systems, with some users expressing a desire for the perceived simplicity and reliability of Macs. The conversation touches on broader issues of software design, user experience, and the prevalence of Windows in the market, which makes it a target for malware. Overall, the thread reflects a common frustration with Windows update processes and the need for more user-friendly options.

For anyone who makes the naive claim that Macbooks are easier to administer than Windows, here's a little blog entry for your amusement: http://harborsparrow.blogspot.com/2009/12/boot-camp-revisited.html

Every OS gets arcane sometimes.

All I wanted was (other than a Pepsi) to be able to finish the work I'm doing ; so that I don't lose it. Should

I have to choose between the two? What if I am working outside of home and I need to leave in a hurry,

and I get the message when I try to turn off the computer?

How about giving me the option of updating a few hours from a point on?

Borg, I have been administering database and web servers on several versions of Windows for many years, and I have not had the problem you mention about the reboots. However, I have some ideas of what may cause that, including in particular not enough disk space for the swap file. Feel free to message me about Windows admin issues, as I am very interested in them.
It looks like Russ was right on the hardware failure. One of the issues that had to be fixed was a failing UPS. It's been running for nearly a week without any shutdowns so it looks like it's been solved finally.
