I have to choose between the two? What if I am working outside of home and I need to leave in a hurry,

and I get the message when I try to turn off the computer?

How about giving me the option of updating a few hours from a point on?

Borg, I have been administering database and web servers on several versions of Windows for many years, and I have not had the problem you mention about the reboots. However, I have some ideas of what may cause that, including in particular not enough disk space for the swap file. Feel free to message me about Windows admin issues, as I am very interested in them.

It looks like Russ was right on the hardware failure. One of the issues that had to be fixed was a failing UPS. It's been running for nearly a week without any shutdowns so it looks like it's been solved finally.
