SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on building a simple electromagnetic motor using a steel nail, copper wire, and a frame for assembly. A commutator is suggested to be created by cutting a copper pipe in half. Participants provide practical tips for constructing the motor, emphasizing the importance of proper wiring and magnetic field orientation for optimal performance.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of electromagnetism
  • Familiarity with electric circuits
  • Knowledge of materials such as copper and steel
  • Experience with basic hand tools for assembly
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of electromagnetism and motor operation
  • Learn about different types of commutators and their functions
  • Explore various wire winding techniques for electromagnetic coils
  • Investigate the effects of magnetic field strength on motor efficiency
USEFUL FOR

Students in physics or engineering, hobbyists interested in DIY electronics, and anyone looking to understand the fundamentals of electric motor construction.

Homework Statement

I need to build an electric motor. I can only use some type of iron bar (maybe a steel nail) copper wire, a frame (to hold it all together). I am giong to need a commutator (probably try to cut a copper pipe in half maybe). Can anyone try to give nay tips or suggestions? Thanks in advance
